As the name implies, the Mountain Air Golf Community is located at the top of a mountain. The Blue Ridge Mountains frame the Mountain Air Golf Course and provide an excellent setting for one of the most challenging courses in North Carolina. The course was nominated by Golf Digest as the best new private golf course at the time it was opened in 1995. The shifts in elevation offer an intense challenge for players who want the ultimate in a championship course. With 18-holes the par 71 course provides golfers with massive slopes, long narrow fairways, and multiple natural terrain barriers which ensure concentration and care must be taken during every swing.
The original course was designed by golf architect Scott Pool. Additionally, a short course is being added with nine more holes to provide visitors with the option of playing a long game or a short game. The Mountain Air Golf Course offers a Golf Learning and Performance Center. At the center there are multiple practice areas and there are plans to add a golf library along with video analysis of golf swings in hopes of improving techniques.
The Clubhouse at Mountain Air offers multiple dining experiences. Casual dinners may want to visit the Sunset Grille, or the Orville and Wilbur Bar and Grill which offer poolside dining experiences. For fancier meals or private affairs the Oak Room offers excellent cuisine in a formal setting. The Celo Room provides diners with a private experience. It is considered the place to go for a private anniversary or birthday celebration.
Residents and visitors alike have plenty to do and see outside the golf course. There are numerous parks in the area including Creekside Park which features an outdoor amphitheatre, Heritage Ridge Park, and Hawks Ledge Park with a hammock, a children’s play area and a fire pit. Spanning over 1,000 acres Mountain Air also offers close to ten miles of walking, hiking, jogging, and mountain biking trails as well as Laughing Waters Nature Cove which is home of the Natural History Discovery Center.
The more athletic residents will enjoy the Chautauqua Activity and Fitness Center. There they can swim in the heated pool, visit the aerobics room, receive spa treatments, workout in the fitness center, take in a movie at the movie theatre, or go to the family game room and craft room for creative family based activities. There are also tennis courts and a basketball court at Mountain Air for those who wish to pick up a racquet or shoot some hoops.
